Escalating Demands for Executions by Prosecutors of Prisoners,
and Worrying Verdict in the Coming Weeks
European Saudi Society for Human Rights
12/09/2014
The European Saudi Society for Human Rights (ESSHR) condemns the continuance prosecutions of the prisoners of conscience and human rights activists by the Saudi authorities. These activists and prosecutors are criminalized for practicing activities as freedom of expressions and the right of peaceful assembly, and 26 of these detainees are demanded to be executed by the public prosecutors. Another detainee is Bandar Khalid Abu Sharar (22-year-old), detained in the General Investigation Directorate’s prison in Dammam since October 2012, he was recently added it which makes it 27 possible execution case. The ESSHR strongly condemns the Judicial System that sentences 5 detainees to death in May and June of 2014, one out of these five cases is a minor when he was arrested.
The ESSHR is looking forward and deeply
concerned about the 12th of August 2014, where it is expected the
Saudi justice’s sentences on the political opponent Sheikh Nemer Al Nemer,
detained since 08/07/2012. This will be the 9th session of his trial
with regards to his practice of freedom of expression and the right to peaceful
assembly and where the public prosecutor is demanding an execution. Moreover,
in 20/08/2014, the 9th session of Mohammed Saleh Al Zenadi’s trial
is scheduled. Al Zenadi was arrested on 23/05/2013, and it is also expected
that he will be sentenced to death in this session of the trial, as it the
public prosecutor had demanded it.
In a report released in December 2013 titled “Demands for
Executions - Statements Obtained by Forced Confession: the Executive Branch
Concluded 2013 With Demands for Executions of Demonstrators and Activists[1]”,
the ESSHR discussed some of the flaws in the law in the Justice System of
Saudi Arabia in which makes the existing trials and the demands for execution
violate the right to a fair trial’s principle.
Following up with prosecutors’ demands and sentences, ESSHR presents 27 cases including some minors when were arrested
and have been demanded to be executed. And There are possibly some other unknown
cases. Here
are the cases, as follows:
-
Initial sentences in 18 cases, while
7 cases are still waiting.
-
Within the 18 initial sentence
cases, 5 cases were sentenced to death (not final).
-
Final sentences in 2 cases.
Here is an updated list, which ordered according to the ESSHR monitoring:
